Chapter Fifteen

Daniel and Michael filed into the room shortly after us with another crowd of vampires. Nadine followed my gaze and waved them over. Once they made it up, there was only time for a brief hello and to figure out seats, I was on the aisle with Nadine next to me to keep Mike at a distance, before we heard a voice come over a microphone. We all turned and the noise in the room died quickly. A woman stood on the middle platform now, looking around at all of us. Her familiar eyes rested on me for a second longer than the others. It was Fiona.

“Welcome,” she said without so much as a smile. “We have quite a list today so let’s get started.” The ‘list’ turned out mostly to be a bunch of updates from other Lanks around our area.

I stayed rapt with fascination, hearing about other places like ours and how different each seemed to be. The Lank of Ontario, for instance, was switching weapons for newer models to see how well they performed.

Why we needed weapons was lost on me until the last point of the night was brought up. “Our last bit of news is of the ravengers in our area.”

I froze, listening intently. I only heard briefly of the ravengers from my first days with Daniel and Mike, but not since then.

“Now there is no reason for alarm. There has been an increase in neonate activity in these past few years like most of you know, but we’ve always thought it was random. We are starting to believe that it is not. There is someone behind this. The ravenger numbers are growing. We have started tracking more intensely on where neonates spring up so that we may have a chance to save them before the ravengers reach them. Things are different now. They are more aggressive and smarter. They have a leader.”

There was an intense murmur at this as everyone exchanged glances.

Fiona cleared her throat once before all fell silent again. “Now we do not tell you this to worry you. We tell you so that you may be more cautious in the outside world. Groups are high priorities when it comes to outside trips. There will be no solo adventures as far as we are concerned. We want to keep you protected. There have been no signs of them outright attacking vampires in daylight, but it might just come to that, so we want you to be prepared. Thank you,” she finished and stepped down from the platform, joining a few others on the main floor.

Immediately, voices rose up all around us, all discussing the last piece of news no doubt. A sliver of fear passed over me. I never realized how serious it was. When Michael mentioned the ravengers before I thought of them as distant neighbors. They didn’t bother you and you didn’t bother them.

Now they were a threat. There were so many things nobody had told me yet. The ravengers had a leader.
